Trade with Chile

Sir, — In your editorial (April 17) you mentioned among other things, that if the A.F.0.L.-C.1.0. in the United States (which represent only 14M workers) are satisfied that a trade boycott of Chile is not justified, the New Zealand Federation of Labour should be satisfied too. I am sure that there are a lot of things that satisfy the United States that should by no means satisfy New Zealanders (e.g. the criminal genocide in Vietnam). Let the F.0.L., and more specifically, the New Zealand workers, decide for themselves, and not ask them to follow foreign patterns especially if they come from the United States where a trade ban on Chile would be cynical if we take into account the participation of “Uncle Sam,” in the bloody, overthrow of President Allende in 1973. — Yours, etc., R. O. SALAZAR. April 18, 1979.
