Rhodesian elections
Sir, — Referring to Georgie Hall’s letter (April 16), I think that before we work ourselves into a lather over the unjust way the Rhodesian elections are conducted we should ponder about the way elections are fashionable in socialist countries. Some 5 per cent of the population belongs to the ruling party which carefully screens the candidates’ reliability and trustworthiness. These Uncle Toms are then voted for, no alternatives permitted. If you did not want to vote for them, off with your head, you are obviously an enemy of the people. This way the dictatorship is always assured of a 99 per cent result, though in some places it can go’ as high as 105 per cent, whatever you make of. that. Judging by the way we kowtowed to Hitler. Stalin and Idi Amin while in power and abused them as soon as they lost power to kill millions it is obvious that mankind never learns. — Yours, etc , C. E. FIELD. April 15, 1979.
