Defence spending
Sir, — The Minister of Defence (Mr Gill) state? (“The Press,” April 18) that New Zealand must not let its armed forces decline to the point where the country was not prepared for any threat. Can it possibly be that Government expenditure in the health, welfare, education and aid fields will be cut while the defence vote will be increased to make us feel safe from the threat? I for one do not wish New Zealand to help to increase the already disgusting world total spent on armaments. But when a Trident submarine steams into Lyttelton under our A.N.Z.U.S. pact, 1 might feel safer from the threat — not likely — Yours, etc., M. E. STUART. April 18, 1979.
