Access to hospital

Sir, — The City Council authority which' heard the application for specified departure by the Hospital Board to enable erection of a permanent bridge across the Avon to the hospital site stated “that they were mindful of the undesirable effects the bridge could undoubtedly produce,” and so allowed the departure only subject to certain conditions. It is naive to accept that these conditions laid down by the City Council will remain in the distant future. Once a permanent bridge is erected, it will be only a matter of time before these conditions are eroded and dropped. The obvious consequence will be a marked and undesirable increase in traffic to that part of the city which houses the cultural centre and Botanic Gardens. It has not been demonstrated to my satisfaction that the bridge is essential for the “efficient and safe functioning of the hospital.” ■ — Yours, etc. T. M. J. MALING. April 18, 1979.
