University bursaries

Sir, —Because I hold more than a mild interest in the report and picture, (“The Press,” April 12) depicting university students expressing their feelings regarding bursaries, I wish to ask two questions of any who participated. (1) How do they interpret the passage of scripture attributed to St Paul Ist Corinthians chapter 3 verses 18, 19, King James version: “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” The Good News Bible translates it:

“No one should fool himself, if anyone among you thinks he is wise by this world’s standards, he should become a fool, in order to be truly wise. For what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God’s sight”? (2) Are they motivated by the desire to get rather than give? — Yours, etc., F. H. ENGELBRECHT* Oxford. April 16, 1979.
