Arthur Thomas letter

Sir, — There are aspects Of Arthur Allan Thomas’s case that deeply disturb the consciences of many New Zealanders. This uneasiness has been compounded by the publication of Thomas’s letter smuggled out of Hautu Prison. The Minister of Justice and the Justice Department must not be allowed to bury Thomas’s charges against the Justice Department in a bureaucratic report. Cabinet Ministers are finally accountable to the public, not Cabinet, not caucus, not Parliament.

Thomas continues stoutly to maintain his innocence; that after eight years in goal, Thomas, on a stand of principle, refuses parole until his innocence is established, commands respect, whether one believes him guilty or innocent. It is absolutely intolerable that this man, whether guilty or innocent, deemed worthy of parole, should be the victim of the petty-minded, pin-pricking persecution to which, he charges, the Justice Department is subjecting him. The Minister should publicly answer the charges, or justify them. — Yours, etc., M. CREEL. April 14, 1979.
