South Africa and sport
Sir, — Mr Lindhorst’s list of 12 single-body sports in South Africa is impressive, but superficial. Of three of them I have no information, but six others have had no non-racial body ever, and so control has been effectively in white hands. Of the other three, cricket has a non-rac-ial Cricket Board whose president, Hassan Howa, has
stated that mixing of races in the rival Governmentapproved Cricket Association is under permit only. The non-racial Athletics Board rejected integration; and the Soccer Federation stated that “dialogue is meaningless in present State policy.” Mr Lindhorst has ignored two other non-racial requirements: No “umbrella” bodies hiding apartheid groups; and freedom for non-racial spokespeople to travel. Mr Howa has stated that he has been refused a passport. If he or another spokesperson for non-racial sport were invited here to give the non-racial viewpoint would Mr Lindhorst recommend that a passport be granted? — Yours, etc., A. J. CAMPBELL.
