Neutral referees opposed
Westport reporter The New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association has come out against the neutral test referee policy of the International Rugby Board. At its annual conference in Westport over Easter week-end, the association unanimously agreed to ask the New Zealand Rugby Union to withdraw from the neutral referees’ agreement.
The conference was opposed to the agreement because it could not see New Zealand getting a fair deal. The retiring chairman of the association, Mr S. Palmer of Wellington, said he could not see New Zealand referees gaining full international status in the system because of New Zealand’s isolation and the fact that home union countries preferred United Kingdom referees.
Officers elected were: President, L. Mahoney (Christchurch); vice-presi-dent, J. Hansen (North Auckland); chairman, R. Macey (Nelson); executive council, W. S. Falvey (Wellington), J. M. A. Forsyth (Wellington), R. A. Lithgow (Taranaki), D. H. Millar (North Otago), R. A. Wilson (Auckland), D. G. Marinkovic (Bay of Plenty), B. Thompson (Southland).
