Victory to Maoris

PA Rotorua A New Zealand Maori XV defeated a Wasps invitation side 38-15 in a lively game of rugby at the Rotorua stadium yesterday. It was a good game of running rugby which yielded eight tries. The Maoris in particular ran the ball whenever possible and their swift backs overshadowed their opposites. Shane Gibbons on the wing

was one of the stars for the Maoris. He scored two good tries and always looked dangerous. On the other wing, Robert Kururangi also had a good game. For the Wasps, the Fijian full-back, Nemani Naburi, displayed good attacking flair while the All Black winger Brian Ford showed good form with several strong runs. In his second-to-last firstclass match, lan Kirkpatrick

led the Wasps forwards by example. He was well supported by John Fleming and John Loveday.

Scores: New Zealand Maoris 38 (Shane Gibbons 2, Robert Kururangi, Mac Macallion, Jim Love and Hika Reid tries; Casey Wanoa 2 conversions, dropped goal, Andy Baker 2 conversions, penalty); Wasps 15 (Brian Ford, David Loveridge, John Black tries; Nemani Naburi penalty).
