Rangers again miss soccer final

For the second successive year, Rangers have been beaten when one step short of reaching the Air New Zealand soccer final.

In an uninspiring semifinal on Saturday in Auckland, Hanimex United beat Rangers, 3-1, to advance to the final today. In the other semi-final, Newmans Nelson United beat Manurewa with an extra time penalty by John Enoka. This was a far livelier match, if only for the fact that the referee (Mr Harry Videler) cautioned eight players and sent off the Manurewa goalkeeper, Frank van Hattum.

Last year, Rangers lost, 2-1, to Eastern Suburbs and have done exceptionally well to reach the semi-finals two year running. They will now be able to settle down to their main task of the season, winning the Midland Coachlines Soccer League. They will meet Western in a postponed league match today.

Trans Tours United recorded its first win Of the Rothmans Soccer League season when it beat Dunedin City at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday. It was an improved performance from United in what was an entertaining match. Mount Wellington increased its lead in the competition with a 1-0 win over Blockhouse Bay in Auckland yesterday. Clive Campbell

scored his fourth goal 'this season for the Mount in the second half. Manawatu United was re< warded for a tireless, determined performance with its first league points of the seaon when it beat Stop Out, 1-0. Although it applied considerable pressure for most of the match, it was not until the final two minutes that the winning goal was scored. These two teams will meet in the return match at Lower Hutt today, this game having been postponed from last Wednesday.
