Chch volleyball sides well represented

Christchurch teams will be well represented in the New Zealand secondary schools’ volleyball championships in Tauranga on May 4, 5 and 6. The first three teams from each grade .of the southern zone secondary schools’ qualifying tournament held at Cowles Stadium on Friday and Saturday were chosen to compete in the finals. Avonside Girls’ High School won the senior girls grade and Kaiapoi High School A the junior girls grade, while Aranui High School A finished second in the senior bovs’ division. King’s High School (Dunedin) dominated the two boys’ grades and it provides three of the six teams to travel to the finals. The teams who qualified for the national finals are:

Boys.—Senior: King’s H.S. A, Aranui H.S. A, Burnside H.S. Junior: King’s A, King’s B, Hillmorton H.S. Girls.—Senior: Avonside G.H.S., Christchurch G.H.S., Nelson Girls College. Junior: Kaiapoi H.S. A, Avonside, Christchurch G.H.S. A.

Results from the semifinals were: Boys Senior.—Semi-finals: King’s H.S. A beat Shirley 8.H.5.,, 15-5, 16-14, 15-7; Aranui H.S. A beat Burnside H.S., 16-14, 15-10, 15-12. For third and fourth place: Burnside beat Shirley, 3-15, 15-9, 13-16, 15-11. Final: King’s A beat Aranui A, 15-13, 16-14, 15-8. Junior.—Semi-finals: King’s H.S. A beat Hillmorton H.S., 15-10, 15-12; King’s H.S. B beat St Paul’s (Dunedin), 15-8, 15-2. For third and fourth: Hillmorton beat St Paul’s, 15-5, 15-11. Final: King’s A beat King’s B, 15-13, 15-12.

Girls Senior. —Semi-finals: Avonside G.H.S. beat Otago G.H.S., 15-7, 15-4, 15-11; Christchurch G.H.S. beat Nelson Giris’ College, 17-15, 15-6, 15-12. For third and fourth: Nelson beat Otago, 15-10, 15-11, 15-13. Final: Avonside beat Christchurch G.H.S., 15-8, 15-13, 15-8. Junior. —Semi-finals: Avonside G.H.S. beat Christchurch G.H.S. A, 15-5. 15-5; Kaiapoi H.S. A beat Marlborough Girls’ College, 13-9, 5-15, 15-4. For third and fourth: Christchurch G.H.S. A beat Marlborough, 11-15, 15-5. 15-6. Final: Kaiapoi beat Avonside, 15-4, 15-9.
