Demolition programme

Forty-six old houses have been demolished in Christchurch, since 1974 under statutory notices, according to the annual report of the Christchurch City Council’s health department. Another 173 houses were demolished without the council’s having to go through formal notice procedures. A total of 17 hectares has been cleared during the last five years of the housing improvement programme. Four of those hectares were cleared under statutory notices. During the period, 1252 informal repair notices, and 37 statutory notices, have been issued by the council, with the aim of conserving older houses which still have a chance of an extended life.
