New dump soon for Heathcote
Legal requirements for a new Heathcote County Council rubbish dump should be completed within the next two weeks and dumping will start soon after, according to the County Chairman (Mr J. M. McKenzie). The new dump, on about Bha of land to the west of Truscotts Road, will replace the existing dump, which is rapidly filling up. The council will give the grassed-over old dump to the Ferrymead Trust in return for the new site. Mr McKenzie said that a subdivision plan would be forwarded to the Registrar of Lands to complete the transaction legally. The area would then have to be fenced and a road built on to it before dumping could begin. Cr R. M. Cunningham told a meeting of the council’s works and reserves committee that congestion at the existing dump was such that he had been told recently of persons having to wait two hours before they could dump their rubbish. Mr McKenzie said there was no alternative if dumping was to be controlled. Because the face of the dump was so high, dumping had to be restricted. The alternative was extending the dump towards Bridle Path Road. This was ruled out as unacceptable by committee members. The committee decided that the dump should be closed on Good Friday, Easter Day, and Easter Monday.
