Kaikoura calf sale strong
The calf market at Kaikoura reflected the general increase ii. .•auie prices, and was especially strong for the medium quality, where sales averaged between 'slso and $l7O for steer calves. The prices, the demand, and the offering were in sharp contrast to last year’s sale. About 1200 calves were offered this year, compared with 941 last year. A strong demand was also evident for small heifer calves, and one observer said that the sale compared favourably with Addington Market prices, al though not many calves have yet been offered at Addington this year. Buyers came to Kaikoura from as far north as Blenheim and as far south as Banks Peninsula. The top price reached was $2OO for Angus and Angus-cross steer calves, offered by M. and E. Boyd in a lot of 14. and by H. J. Hewson in a lot of 11. Mr Hewson’s calves fetched the top price in last year's sale as well, at less than a third of this year's price—s6o. Angus and Angus-Hereford steer calves of medium quality sold in the $l7O range, although a few smaller calves dropped as low as $lO6.
