The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s overseas promotion group left yesterday for Japan. United States and Europe in a bid for more shipping through the port. The board’s chairman (Mr J. E. Mannering). general manager (Mr J. A. McPhail! and container terminal manager (Mr P. G. Morgan) will visit Japan, and Mr McPhail and Mr Morgan will go on to the United States and Europe. They are expected to concentrate on the new type of shipping envisaged for the future which appears to be predominantly roll-on. This move was indicated during the week by the New’ Yorkbased head of the Alanttrafik Express Service (Mr Rolf Wallgren) on a visit to New' Zealand. Mr Wallgren, with his company's New Zealand agents, East Asiatic Company, Ltd, said there would be a continuing move towards roll-on shipping described as “ships of the future.” “However,” said Mr Wallgren, “the change would be slow because of the huge investments in container vessels and shore facilities.” How shipping was going to cope with rising costs in the future was one area of concern discussed by Mr Wallgren.
