Synchronised swimming to Southlander

A Southland girl, Karen Gunby, repulsed a challenge from a strong Wellington contingent to win the open solo title at the first New Zealand synchronised swimming championships at Queen Elizabeth 11 Park on Saturday.

After the figures exercise in the morning Miss Gunbv was just a point ahead of her Wellington opponent, and in the routine exercise in the evening won by a similar margin, giving her a 2.10 points advantage. Miss Gunby is a much more experienced synchronised swimmer than Miss Ramsey, but a background of pool swimming was of considerable aid to Miss Ramsey and by next year’s championships she will be a strong contender for tne title. The standard of the open solo competition was not high. The retirement of Anne Breekveldt and Sally-Ann Jenkins, who represented New Zealand at the world championships in West Berlin last August, has left a large void at the top of the competitive ladder. It would be another year before the present swimmers neared world-class, said an official after the championships. There was close competition for both the intermeidate and junior solo titles. Sharon English (Taranaki) had an edge on KerryAnne Rippon (Bay of Plenty) in the intermediate figures. In the

routine exercise both girls recorded similar scores. Miss English combined with Janice Duncan to win the intermediate duet with a points score that bettered the total of the winning duo in the open grade. After the figures Wendy Anink (Canterbury) was three points behind Kay Wilson (Auckland), but she produced an excellent routine that brought her within half a point of the Auckland girl in the final result. Miss Anink gained the highest score of any junior or intermediate swimmer for her routine. Results were: OPEN Solo. — K. Gunby (Southland), 131.4 a, 1; J.
