Hockey seeks direct affiliation
A decision to break new ground and seek direct representation to the world controlling body, F.1.H., was made by the New Zealand Hockey Association's management committee last evening. Mr B. Bremner, of Wellington, was chosen as New Zealand’s nomination for the F.I.H. council, which will be elected at the fiftieth annual congress in Belgium on September 28. A vice-president of the national association and chairman of the Hockey Umpires’ Association. Mr Bremner is an internationally graded umpire. He officiated at the international tournament in Christchurch earlier this year. Previously, New Zealand's interests on F.I.H. have been served by the Australian repTesentative, who in recent yean
has been Mr P. G. Ryan. The meeting agreed to nominate him as a vice-president of F.I.H. council and to support the reelection of the president. Mr R. Frank, of Belgium. In spite of the receipt of a telegram from the Hockey Umpires’ Association voicing strong opposition the meeting decided that umpires would use the card system for indicating penalties at the next national tournament, on August 25 at Napier. The coloured cards—green for a warning, yellow for a tempor ary suspension, and red for a full suspension—are used widelv in major tournaments overseas where language difficulties make vocal communication between plaver and umpire unsatisfactory The card system was used for
the first time in the Christchurch International tournament. The meeting also decided that any player receiving three temporary suspensions in the tourna. ment would automatically be stood down for the next match his team was drawn to plav. Any subsequent temporary suspensions. would be reported to the judiciary committee for action. Mr A. S Palmer, of Auckland, was appointed manager of the New Zealand team to compete in the World Cup tournament in Kuala Lumpur next March. He also managed the team In the World Cup contest in the Netherlands last year. The resignation of Mr B. J. Pike from the management committee was accepted. The former New Zealand representative. Mr K Thomson, will be invited to fill the vacancy.
