NAILS NOBBLE APPLES

<-V Z. Preu Association) NELSON. Manicurists, or alternatively nail biters, should be employed in apple packing houses, says the general manager of the Apple and Pear Board (Mr J. B. Cubey). Speaking at the annual Nelson provincial conference of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation, he said that New Zealand growers produced fruit which was generally as good as, and sometimes better than, fruit elsewhere in the world. Too often, however, the appearance was ruined by the mixed maturity, nail marks, grader bruising, and poor grading. “I strongly recommend employment of a manicurist or, alternatively, people who bite their nails, because nail marks ruin good fruit,” said Mr Cubey. “A buyer will delight in pointing out a fault, but he rarely praises a good pack.”
