Hotel Upgrading Causes Concern
The South Island Local Bodies’ Association yesterday expressed concern that decisions of the Licensing Control Commission in forcing the upgrading of hotels in the country might be unwarranted.
The association will ask the Commission to take into account the use of the hotels before deciding what standard they should be raised to. Mr W. N. Martin (Westport) said that if some hotels in his district were forced to raise their standards it would almost certainly mean that some of the people who lived there permanently would have to leave. He said about 50 men were
paying £5 a week for full board at the hotels and were satisfied with their conditions. Mr Martin saw no reason why every hotel should be required to upgrade. Another delegate said the Commission had been very tolerant towards country hotels, even those owned by the breweries, which could well afford to pay to have their premises upgraded.
