No Knowledge Of Request

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. No details are known in Wellington of a reported Utah-Williamson-Burnett request for an increase in the £9,387,787 contract price for driving the tailrace tunnel from Deep Cove to Lake Manapouri’s West Arm.

The Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said the request was not known in the Wellington office of Bechtel. Nor had it

been relayed to the Ministry of Works. "It appears the contractors are basing their claim on ‘latent conditions,’ that is conditions which they believe they can prove were completely impossible of prediction by an experienced and competent contractor,” Mr Allen said. “Bechtel cannot give a decision on an issue such as this without reference to the owner (the New Zealand Government),” said Mr Allen. “This is written into the agreement with Bechtel. What is intended by Mr Long is no doubt a recommendation,” the Minister said.
