GAMES TEAM TOLD: Trouble, And Home You Go’

AUCKLAND-
Members of the New Zealand Empire Games team would not be given any warnings of punishment for any misdemeanours committed overseas—they would be sent straight home, the team manager, Mr R. Shakespeare, said yesterday.
Mr Shakespeare and Dr. W. M. Smeeton gave talks on protocol and personal medical precautions to be taken during the team’s visit to Jamaica.

Team members were anxious to know if there were any Jamaican customs that they should know about so as not to offend anyone during their visit They were told there were none they need to worry about. Mr Shakespeare gave the team a motto. It is that of his old school, Hastings Boys’ High—“Akino.” This, he said, meant "to do one’s utmost at all times.”
OLIVER TO LEAD TEAM (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Two Auckland athletes, the weight-lifter, D. B. Oliver, and the long jumper, D. S. Norris, were yesterday appointed captain and vice-captain, respectively, of the New Zealand Empire Games team. Oliver is one of the prime hopes for a gold medal at Jamaica. He holds the Empire record at 11001 b.
