KNITTING AND TV
Shortage Of Needles
The shortage of knitting needles had worsened in recent months, said the chairman of the drapery and fashion group of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation (Mr F. Baddeley) yesterday. The attention of the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) had been drawn to the situation more than a year ago. Mr Baddley said that the federation had felt that allocations had been reduced progressively as a protective measure for the local manufacturer of plastic needles, but the effect had been felt in supplies of other types of needles. There was also some dissatisfaction with the quality of the local product. The acute shortage of knitting needles today had been accentuated by television, he said. Many women liked to knit while they watched.
