SHOPPING HOURS

Late Night Transferred

In Wellington this week, agreement was reached on a shopkeeper’s right to transfer late shopping night for New Year week to Christmas week. The agreement was reached in negotiations for a new award covering New Zealand (except Northern) general retail shop assistants. The meeting was presided over by the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. W. Armstrong). Mr H. F. Rutland was the advocate for the employers and the secretary of the New Zealand Shop Assistants’ Federation (Mr J. G. Shankie) was advocate for the workers.

Mr Butland said yesterday in Christchurch that wage increases granted included 15s a week for adult males, bringing their pay to £l6 5s and 10s for adult females making a weekly figure of £ll. There were proportionate increases for juniors. Senior status will now be reached at the age of 21 instead of 22. Provision was made for payment for statutory holidays except for temporary staff employed in December for the pre-Christmas period. The award will expire on January 31, 1968.
