Odd Heirloom

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) CAPE TOWN. A single grain of rice inscribed with 150 letters is the odd heirloom of the MacDonald family, of Rondebosch, Cape. The letters, so minute that they have to be read through a powerful magnifying glass, make up the message: “May God grant long and prosperous life to . . .” I Then there is the date. Packed in a silk-lined box, measuring 2in by lin, the grain of rice was sent to Mrs Irma MacDonald’s husband by an anonymous Indian in Dehli, a few months after the great Bihar earthquake in 1934. Some 10,000 people died in a few minutes, and thousands were made homeless by the earthquake. Communications were disrupted. Giant fissures opened almost daily, swallowing up human beings, beasts and buildings. Mrs MacDonald’s husband helped to organise relief teams and worked night and day to distribute food, blankets and clothing.
