Road Toll Now 280

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 19. Up to 4 p.m. today 280 traffic deaths this year have been reported to the Transport Department. At this time last year the figure was 331. The toll this month is 28 compared with 36 at the same time last July. Man Dies A man died soon after being admitted to Opotiki Hospital this afternoon as a result of

head injuries suffered in a collision between two cars. He was Angus Mac Kay MacDonald, aged about 80, a retired farmer, of Otara, Opotiki. Mrs Winifred Evelyn MacDonald, a passenger in her husband’s car, suffered a fractured arm and was admitted to hospital. The driver of the other car, Rangi Tutu Woodford, aged 28, a share-milker, of Toatoa, suffered minor injuries. His wife, Mrs R. Woodford, suffered head injuries. She was admitted to hospital where her condition tonight was reported to be fair. The accident occurred at the junction of Otara and Waiokea roads about 4.30 p.m.

Collapsed An elderly man collapsed in his car while driving along Great North road, Point Chevalier, about 2 p.m. today. He was Gordon Booth Radford Shepherd, retired, of 708 Avondale road, Avondale. His car ran off the road and struck a power pole. Mr Shepherd was dead when an ambulance arrived. The police believe he suffered a heart attack. Freed From Car St. John Ambulance men worked for 30 ntinutes with hydraulic jacks to free a man from a car crash at Wiri early today. He is Ronald Edward George Newman, of Papatoetoe, who was trapped between the roof of his car and the bonnet. Hydraulic jacks lifted the roof clear to free him. He was taken to Middlemore Hospital with lacerations to the head, back injuries and shock. His car left the road, hit a lamp-post and stopped in a ditch.
