Suspense Before Winning Goal

McCormick's final penalty, from an acute angle on the sideline, hung in its flight and bounced high on the cross-bar before finally flopping over for Linwood's winning points two minutes from time.

It ended in an unusual manner a match which had been far from unusual and, indeed, very like the day: dull with intermittent bright patches. Most of the brightness came by transistor from Carisbrook which was of more Interest to the scattered spectators than the struggle on Lancaster Park Oval.

Linwood won because it possessed a most excellent fullback and goal-kicker in McCormick, and because over-all the team was more accomplished and better-drilled than Albion. Linwood did not score any tries but had the second five-eighths, K. Gimblett, possessed a little more speed, this would not have been so. Twice he snapped up a loose ball and broke through, but his lack of pace saw his supports well covered and the movements breaking down. Linwood possessed a sternrucking pack but Albion won a handsome share of the ball from set play. For this, it had to thank S. Innes, who won a

great number of tight-heads from A. M. Holland, and the big lock, R. Rowlatt, who jumped high and to good effect in the line-outs. The best forwards in the loose were Linwood’s K. Wyber and M. Richards, while the outstanding back, with McCormick, was the Albion captain and first fiveeighths, Adams. G. T. Barrett also carved through twice only to be halted by McCormick, while J. Newlove did a lot of useful tidying from the Albion right-wing. Harrison did not have a particularly happy day and was caught in possession frequently. Referee: Mr A. R. Taylor.
