Protest To Minister On Fishing Dates
A strong protest will be sent to the Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) by the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society over action of the Marine Department on proposals for the opening date of fishing of high-country waters. Steps to obtain a uniform opening date for high-country fishing waters were being taken, the Marine Department advised. It was proposed to recommend to the Minister that the opening date for North Canterbury, Ashburton, South Canterbury, Waimate and Waitaki be the first Saturday in November. The North Canterbury society’s opening date was already fixed as the first Saturday in November. The five societies had asked for the opening date to be on the Saturday nearest November 1, not tlie first Saturday in November, speakers said. It seemed to be first a matter of what the department wanted, Mr N. I. Voyce said. “I think we should kick up a fuss.” Mr W. H. Robinson said major acclimatisation societies were being “pushed around” by the department. A strong protest should be made to the Minister. “We would be foolish to
put up with K,” Mr G. Mugford said. It was decided to write a strong letter to the Minister and also to raise the matter with the South Island Council of Acclimatisation Societies.
