CHILDREN’S COURT
Youth Admits Charges A 16-year-old youth who was involved in a high-speed chase to Chertsey in the early hours of Saturday, July 2, and assaulting a police constable, was sentenced to periodic detention for six months when he appeared before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., in the Children’s Court yesterday. He was disqualified from driving for two years. The youth (Mr R. G. Blunt), was charged with unlawfully taking a car and assaulting Constable G. R. Orman with intent to injure. Yesterday he admitted both charges. Last week he denied the charge of assault. Another youth who appeared on the same charges was sentenced to Borstal training last week. Sergeant J. M. Phelan said the defendant was the driver of the car and when it stopped he threw something to his companion. Constable Orman then received a cut on his hand from a knife which had been thrown to the other youth by the defendant, Mr Blunt said the defendant admitted the charge of assault as he was party to the offence in the legal sense but he denied throwing the knife to his companion. The knife was an ordinary pocket knife and the defendant’s companion had been cleaning his nails with it when in the car.
