Boys’ Brigade
Sir, —I am sure others have been placed in the embarrassing position I found myself in this week, the Boys’ Brigade “8.8. Week.” Boys’ Brigade members are given a card by their company and requested to ask family and personal friends for contributions to the brigade’s funds. I am mindful of the excellent work performed by the organisation, but surely requesting charity, as this amounts to, hardly fits the ideals of the Boy’ Brigade; The Scouts, even if they perform a very menial “job” for something more than a “bob,” are at least required by their chiefs to work for contributions. — Yours, etc., HATASBLUE.
July 8, 1966. [Mr W. Bishop, publicity officer for the Boys’ Brigade replies :*“lt is true that the Boys’ Brigade movement relies to a considerable degree on the support of well-wishers during this annual appeal. The emphasis is placed, as stated by your correspondent, on ‘family and personal friends’ and there are thousands of these up and down the country who are happy to help, and by no means ‘embarrassed’ as ‘Hatasblue’ apparently is. Many companies encourage their boys to give some service in return for a donation.”]
