MENTROM’S GOOD WIN
Second Round Snooker
Second round matches In the Canterbury amateur snooker championships failed to produce any major surprises, with the players more intent to keep their records Intact than to earn plaudits with the sensational. T. Mentrom, in his game against R. Higgs, however, did show the main Ingredients of a man in form. Mentrom produced a consistant exhibition of potting in the first frame without executing the spectacular, and went into an easy lead which he retained to the finish. Frame two seemed destined to be a repeat of the first. With a possible of 22 points left on the table. Higgs. 18 points behind, set about his task with more purpose and gained the Just reward. He sunk the brown and blue In separate shots, and capitalising on a safety error by Mentrom. he potted the pink and bla.-k to level the match. Mentrom took a 2-1 lead with another solid effort In frame three. Higgs again evened the score in a rather remarkable game. Leading by 23 points with the colours remaining on the table, Higgs had his lead whittled away through some bad luck and some rank bad shots. He did win on the black ball but it was not a convincing performance. After the initial thrust and parry, Mentrom outmanoeuvered Higgs to take the fifth frame and the match.
