Hornby Marked Closely
HORNBY 13: R. Mullally, P Tongue, and I. Drayton
tries; Drayton, two goals. CHRISTCHURCH «: W. Morrison, two goals.
Close marking by both sets of backs prevented the game from developing into a fastmoving exhibition. Indeed, only Drayton, the Hornby fullback. was capable of breaching the Christchurch back-line consistently. Drayton pushed off several would-be tacklers to score'one touchdown, and made the overlap for Mullally’s try. The Hornby forwards were kept under control for much of the game by the determined Christchurch pack, which was Intelligently led by R. Turton. However, D. Moore and D. Condick broke through the inner defence on occasions.
Besides Turton, B. Phlllipson and R. Franklin showed up with enterprising forward play for the loser.
The Hornby three-quarters never settled down because of the close marking of their opposites. B. Langton, usually received the ball with at least two Christchurch defenders. Mullally, however, ran with speed on the left wing. Referee: Mr P. Yaxley.
