Five Tries To One

MARIST IT: C. C. Worters (two). R. N. Anderson, P. V. Smith, M. H. Mohi tries; J. K. Keremeta goal. SYDENHAM 10: B. McDonald, M. White tries; A. Tuuta two goals.

Although Marist scored five of the seven tries—the last after a glaring knock-on —it suffered through the lack of a goal kicker and led only 12-10 until just on time. The match was marred by a flare-up in the second spell in which several forwards of both teams traded punches. The Marist hooker, N. M. Diggs, was injured in the incident. Marist had the faster backline and produced more decisive forward play. Mohl, W. A. Flavell and Keremeta worked the ball around well from the rucks and R, J. A. McKenzie chased the ball throughout. In the backs Worters accepted his opportunities to score two determined tries. L. Mulcare, at scrum-half, and D. R. Baird, at full-back, both impressed with solid defence. R. Raistrick and F. Clark played well at times for Sydenham, but they could not make any decisive breaks from set play. In the Sydenham pack the veteran forward and coach, I. Pimley, made a brief return and he, B. T. Barron and White played rugged football. Referee: Mr N. Taylor.
