Hawthorne’s Century
ADDINGTON 13: G. Laing, A. F. McNaughton, D. McCosh triek; J. Vivian two goals. PAPANUI S: S. Dunn, B. Craig tries; J. C. Hawthorne goal.
It took Hawthorne four attempts and 72 minutes to kick the goal that took him past the century mark in club matches this season. He finally reached his target with a 25-yard penalty, eight minutes from time. Papanui fought back well in the second half and almost scored what could have been the equalising try near fulltime. May had been on the Addington line for some time. The Addington forwards, led by J. H. Fisher and McNaughtan. played exceptionally well and cancelled out the advantage that papanui had in the outside backs. The speed and evasiveness of the Papanui backs, particularly G. H. Clarke. Dunn and A. N. Amer, made ’ them a constant threat to Addington, but the cover-defence was good and only when Papanui scored its two tries was the defence beaten. T. L. Bisman was the most impressive Papanui forward. McCosh and J. L. White provided much of Addington’s penetration in the backs. Referee: Mr W. K. Henry.
