PRISON OR FINES

Sect Given Alternative (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LISBON, July 10. Forty-nine Jehovah’s Witnesses were given the alternative of short prison terms or fines yesterday after being found guilty of offences against the security of the State. The indictment against the 35 women and 14 men alleged that the sect constituted a political movement aimed at agitation and subversion of the masses and particularly directed its activities at men of military age. The indictment also alleged that some of the accused were either deserters or had refused military service. Members of the sect were taught not to join the army or defend national territory.
