WALK FROM KAIAPOI
£BO Given To Operation 21
About 60 young people between 13 and 23, representing eight Kaiapoi youth groups, walked from Kaiapoi to Christchurch on Saturday morning to draw attention to hunger problems in the world and to raise a further sum for the Kaipaoi committee of the Operation 21 campaign.
In Christchurch £BO was presented to the district organiser of C.0.R.5.0. (Mr G. H. Coley). Rain and cold temperatures did not deter the walkers, who were addressed at Kaiapoi at 9 a.m. by the president of the committee (Mr G. Beggs) and the Deputy-Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr R. Monk). The group arrived in Christchurch about 1 p.m. to be met by Mr Coley. “This is a tremendously important job you and others like you are doing in New Zealand. These people have no future unless we help them. We are glad to feel you must share the work,” he said. The money, which included £5O from Kaiapoi businessmen who had sponsored the walk, and £3O raised mainly from an earlier effort selling firewood, was presented to Mr Coley by the secretary of the Kaiapoi committee (Miss J. Lynskey). I Mr Coley said the money would not be used just for .meals today. The real job of Freedom from Hunger was to help people to help themselves. With its contribution, the Kaiapoi committee shared in this great need.
The Operation 21 campaign will continue for about seven more weeks in Kaiapoi.
