RETURN TO PACIFIC
War Veterans End Cruise (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 8. Three hundred former members of the 3rd Division which served in the Pacific in World War H returned to Auckland from a cruise of the battlefields in the Oriental Queen. The men took with them about £BOOO of medical supplies, food, power generators, motors and other equipment as gifts to the natives and missions in the islands.
The Rev. G. R. Thompson said landings were hazardous. One mission boat was swamped while taking men ashore and five men were tossed into the surf. The former commander of the division, Sir Harold Barrowclough, said it was “remarkable to see the change in the natives on these islands. Before they were undernourished, unhealthy and ill-iooking—now their condition has vastly improved. The SOlomon Islands protectorate is doing a lot in this way.”
