Warning To Mariners
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 8. The Marine Department has drawn the attention of owners and masters of fishing vessels to the possible dangers of automatic pilots. “Neglect to keep a proper lookout while vessels were being steered by automatic pilots has resulted in collisions and strandings,” says the department’s notice. “Mariners are required by the international regulations for preventing collision at sea (1960) to keep a proper lookout at all times. A breach of these regulations is liable for a heavy penalty under section 287 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1952,” says the notice.
