£210,920 Grant For Hostel At Ilam
(New Zealand Press Association)
_ WELLINGTON, July 8. A special grant of £210,920 has been given to the University of Canterbury’ from Colombo Plan funds.
The grant will be used to build a residential hall at the new university site at Ham.
The hall will comprise a four-floor walk-up block and will contain 100 beds in 40 single and 30 two-bed studies. The grant gives some assistance toward the cost of dining room and kitchen facilities and accommodation for a matron and warden. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said that some years ago the Government approved a programme of ex-
' penditure to improve training facilities for Colombo Plan students in New Zealand and to cater for the special training and accommodation needs of Colombo Plan students. This had been limited to one major project at each university centre. In return for the grant the university will make available, through its hostel system, 100 places for students in New Zealand on Government aid programmes such as the Colombo Plan. There are already 120 such students, at Canterbury and it is expected that the allocation of 100 beds can be fully taken up. The Prime Minister said the university was also making its own contribution to solving residential problems of students.
It ultimately planned to build four other residential halls, but In the meantime planned two halls in addition to the Colombo Plan one, Mr Holyoake said.
