“The Press” In 1866
July 10 LICENSED HOUSES.—By the PublicHouse Ordinance, 1866, it is enacted, “That every holder of a license shall have a lamp with sufficient light affixed over the front or principal door of his house, and shall keep the same burning from sunset till eleven o’clock, and any holder of an hotel license shall keep the same burning till sunrise, and any such person neglecting or refusing to comply with the above provisions shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding 20s for every such offence." The town is
not at present too brilliantly lighted, and we notice that this clause in the Act in many cases is ignored. In very few cases are the lights kept burning all night, and in the. case of the holders of wine and beer licenses, the lamps are often not lighted at all. SCHOOLMASTERS’ ASSOCIATION.— A meeting of this association was held on Saturday last at St. Michael's school-room, when the following resolution was adopted, viz.—“ That honorary members should be admitted on an annual subscription of one pound ten shillings.”
