Argentina

Sir, —Last week the lights went out for a nation of 20 million people, and, after two days of paltry reports, the news black-out for us, too, was complete. The wait for “Time” magazine was barely rewarding. Apparently the military found an excuse to move against President lllia when one of its own officers dined with “Peronista leaders,” so the Commander-in-Chief, Pistarini, arrested him, and was in turn dismissed by the President. Pistarini’s refusal to go was supported by the army which now rules with Peronist support. These usurpers will have American blessing, for Argentina refused to join in the sport of kicking the Dominicans while they were down under similar military terrorism. “Time” cynically describes the “temporary” American suspension of diplomatic relations as “for the record” and a “pointless gesture.” So much for the champions of democracy.—Yours, VARIAN J. WILSON. July 8, 1966.

U.K. Christmas Stamps.— Children up to the age of 15 years have been invited by the Postmaster-General (Mr Anthony Wedgwood Benn) to design Britain’s first Christmas postage stamps to be issued in December. A prize of £2O is offered for the successful design—(Reuter).
