FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A deep depression centered just west of the North Island covers New Zealand. Forecast:

The Kaikoura Coast, North Canterbury and • the Sounds.—South to south-east winds, strong in exposed areas; overcast and cold with long periods of rain, some heavy falls likely; snow on the high country. Outlook: occasional showers. Central and South Canterbury.—Southerlies, fresh or strong about the north of Banks Peninsula, otherwise moderate; cloudy and cold with patches of light rain; rain becoming more general in Central Canterbury; snow on the high country. Outlook: occasional showers. Central Marlborough and Nelson. —Easterlies, fresh to strong in exposed areas; cloudy and cold with periods of rain easing gradually to occasional showers in Nelson. Outlook: scattered showers. Buller and Westland.—Easterlies, fresh in exposed areas; partly cloudy in South Westland, elsewhere cloudy with some rain at times especially about the ranges and in Buller; cool temperatures.
