Fewer Valueless Cheques Found
The system of giving warnings on valueless cheques, adopted last year,' had worked well, the retiring president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Retail Motor Trade Association (Mr E. C. Morrin) told the annual meeting. Mr Morrin said it had reduced the incidence of such cheque passing in Christchurch. The warning facilities were valued by the police. Mr Morrin said in his report that details on the! change to decimal currency | would need to be impressed j on members. Consideration, would be given to adequate means by which staff in ser-] vice stations and garages could be trained in handling the new currency. Mr Morrin said negotiations were in hand to start a course in Christchurch to 1 [cover basic hydraulics as they affected the motor industry. The possibility of instituting courses in general business management were also being considere ' He said the whole tr.-de 1 realised that the existing margins were too low and ’ the Government departments, whose job it was to determine them, were reluctant to increase them.
Mr Morrin said that the pro-! posed vehicle testing station i at Sockburn was proceeding.! He was confident that when it was established, pressure' on the existing two stations and garages would be sub-' stantially reduced. “Relief of this pressure is a matter of real importance to all engaged in garage work," he said. “As at peak periods the trade, already short of skilled mechanics, is subjected to considerable delays in time which can ill be spared.” Costs incurred by members of the used vehicle section, in providing bonds, required under the Vehicle Dealers’) Act, had caused some concern, he said. However, after) negotiations with the Under-; writers’ Association, the section was able to benefit from! a substantial concession. Officer elected were: President, Mr R.
