TELEVISION LICENCES

52,170 Sets In Christchurch

Canterbury and Westland now have more licensed television sets than Wellington. Figures issued by the Post Office regional engineer (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) show that the total number of sets in Canterbury and Westland on May 31 was 56,939 compared with 56,586 in Wellington. In Christchurch there were 52,170 sets of which 4700 were hired. At Timaru there were 6300 sets, including 600 hired, and in Westland 1151 sets, including 27 hired. Mr Wilkinson said there was a greater tendency in the North Island to hire sets. In Auckland 16 per cent of all licensed sets were hired, compred with less than 10 pei cent in Christchurch. During the 12 months ended May 31 there had been sharp increases in the number of sets in the Timaru and Westland areas. At Timaru the number of sets had more than doubled from 2428 to 6300 and on the Coast had jumped from 71 to 1151.

The opening of the new transmitter on Sugarloaf had been mainly responsible for the big increases.
