OIL FIRM ‘GIMMICKS’
Motor Trade Criticism A suggestion that oil companies consult the Retail Motor Trade Association before embarking on promotion “gimmicks” was made by Mr C. Mclver at the annual meetling of the Canterbury branch of the association. Mr Mclver said this when recommending that the association continue to fight to improve profit margins. He claimed that some promotions, like giving cars away as prizes, were damaging to the trade. Unit profit on petrol should be a percentage profit.
Mr D. A. Anderson said that the Government had made a break-through in settling claims for higher petrol prices by agreeing to set up a price tribunal. Pub lie hearings were much better than referring important issues, like petrol prices, to government departments. “The big problem is that the trade is not unified in its attitude,” Mr Anderson said. “There should be more cooperation." It was decided to refer the subject to the petrol section for further discussion.
