Gyross Runs Sound Five Furlongs
"The Press" Special Service
HASTINGS. A sound five-furlong gallop by Gyross and good work by Vigour were features of yesterday's ' trials at Hastings. Amber Wine and Macdonald were two top jumpers which disappointed in their respective schooling bouts. Royal Ransom schooied well. There was a frost and the course proper was firm, with the trestles 50ft out, or 10ft beyond the proper distance. The plough offered fast going. On the plough Dunraven (M O. Mingins) worked half a mile in Slsec, the final three in 38 l-ssec. He ran a good second to Sir Juvante on the first day and should be hard to beat in the Longlands Handicap. Vigour (M. O. Mingins) took imin 6 l-ssec for five furlongs, the last three with Rahunui (B. S. Dodds) in 38 3-ssec. Both horses appear to have a chance In their respective races, the Te Mata and Raukawa Handicaps, this week. Each probably would appreciate rain. Howe Fair ran once round in Imin 43 2-ssec. the last three in 40 2-ssec. He may not be out of hi* depth In the Hawke's Bay
Hurdles. He was a bold sprint sixth the first day. On the course proper Royal Dakar (Tooman) ran away from Farlua (M. 0. Mingins) over seven furlongs, which took him Imin 31 4-ssec. a good workout. The last three slowed to 42sec. which was not surprising after the fast pace early. Gyross (B. Cullen), a candidate for the sprint this week, ran alone over five furlongs in Imin 4 l-ssec, the last three In 39sec. Gyross failed over 11 furlongs on the first day, but should be better suited by this week s distance. Eiffel Tower <M. Lawson) ran seven furlongs in Imin 38sec, the last three tn 41sec. a fair working gallop. His stablemate. Kora! (W. Hi’l'is), took 15sec to the furlong for a steady mile. Royal Ransom (M. Mirttana) jumped well in a six-hurdle schooling bout with Macdonald <B. Hillis), which was inclined to run out .at his fences and hamper Royal Ransom. Royal Ransom might surprise with a good showing in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles. Amber Wine (M. Miritana) and Henry (Treweek) jumped five of the course proper steeplechase fences. Henry flattened a pane! at one of them and jumped only moderately.
