Terrific To Miss Caulfield Cup
"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. The fine staying three-year-old, Terrific, will not contest the Caulfield Cup, a mile and a half, at Caulfield on October 15. The trainer, M. E. Ritchie, said yesterday it was decided not to run the horse after consultations with his owner. Dr. A. McGregor Grant, on Monday. However, Terrific will still go to Australia. His main mission is the Melbourne Cup. two miles, at Flemington on November 1.
In the early betting sheets on the Caulfield Cup, Terrific was on the third line of favouritism. For the Melbourne Cup he is on the fourth line.
Before the Melbourne Cup Terrific will contest weight-for-age events. In New Zealand he will start only once, in the Jellicoe Handicap, a mile, at
the Pakuranga Hunt’s meeting at Ellerslie in August. The good mare, Clipjoint, which probably will run in both cups, has pleased Ritchie so much since resuming work that she will be taken south to contest the Stewards* Handicap, seven furlongs, at Trentham on Saturday week. One of Clipjoint’s best efforts was a close third to Red Crest and Eiffel Tower, in the Wellington Cup. As well, she ran third to Grand Filou and Wilful in the A.R.C. Summer Cup, fourth In the W.R.C. Summer Handicap, and fourth to Golden Defoe, Lucy Gray and Arbroath in the A.R.C. Queen Elizabeth Handicap. ,
