CONTROL OF BOYS

Use Of No. 5 Stand A scheme to use No. 5 stand at Lancaster Park for boys attending Wednesday matches and Canterbury’s representative games found favour with members of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last night. The secretary of the Victory Park Board (Mr K. N. McGillivray) told the committee he felt the suggestion should go a long way towards overcoming the problems posed by boys getting out of control, as they had at the game between the Lions and New Zealand Universities last week. The use of No. 5 stand for boys would still leave ample open stand seats available for adults, he said. Special turnstiles in Stevens street could be made available for children only. He proposed that the scheme could be given a trial at the game betwen the Lions and Canterbury on July 23, and that the usual boys’ enclosure on the embankment should not be used.

Many boys were accompanied by their parents at test matches and tended to become integrated in the crowd, said Mr McGillivray. “The fact that ail stand and oval seats are occupied also has a psychological effect in containing the boys on the embankment.” After a discussion on the scheme, a sub-committee was appointed to bring down a recommendation to be submitted to the board next week.
