Appeal Fund At £1500

Contributions of more than £l5OO have been made in Christchurch in the national appeal to raise money for the John Harrison Memorial Fund. The money will be used for the benefit of Mr Harrison’s wife and two infant children.

Mr A. H. McCormack, one of the four trustees of the fund, said yesterday that a deed of trust would be drawn up which would benefit the whole family.

“The money will be used to help Mrs Harrison as well as the children. Mrs Harrison will be given any assistance she may need,” Mr McCormack said. Donations of £532 were received by “The Press” yesterday and will be forwarded to the trustees today. As further gifts are received they will be handed to the trustees who will issue receipts.

The trustees are Sir Edmund Hillary, president of the New Zealand Alpine Club: Mr N. D. Hardie, a friend of Mr Harrison: Mr Robin Harrison, the dead man’s brother; Mr G. T. Wiggs, chairman of directors of the advertising firm of Inglis Wright, Ltd., by which Mr Harrison was once employed; and A. H. McCormack, a Christchurch public accountant.

Among the bigger donations received by “The Press” yesterday were £lOO from the Canterbury Trustee Savings Bank. £lOO from the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd.,

£5O from an anonymous donor, and £lO from Mr J. K. McQuilkin. A number of other donations, including £4 from a girl student, were received. The president of the Canterbury Trustee Savings Bank (Mr G. R. Burrowes) said last evening that it was the tradition of trustee savings banks throughout New Zealand to support good causes. “Our own bank considers it a privilege to contribute to this fund,” he said. Other donations made in Christchurch yesterday included £lOO from the New Zealand Alpine Club, £lOO from New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., £52 10s from Mr R. P. Thompson. £5O from Mr and Mrs N. D. Hardie, £4O from Mr and Mrs W. B. Beaven, £25 from Mr and Mrs D. J. S. Cook, £2O from Mr A. H. Willis, and £lO from Mr and Mrs J. M. H. Davie. A collection would be taken up by the 45 officers and men at the United States Navy base at Christchurch Airport, said the base commander (Commander W. H. Withrow) yesterday. The West Coast branch of the New Zealand Alpine Club is also receiving donations for the fund. The trustees are Mr R. Reedy, secretary of the branch, and Messrs G. Howitt and T. Sweetman.
