Student Selection Soon?
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 28. The University Grants Committee said today that one of the most immediate problems faced by universities was whether buildings could be provided quickly enough to match the growing number of students. The committee’s annual report, tabled In Parliament, said: “It seems very likely to the committee that some selection of students will become necessary in particular
departments of some of the universities during the next few years—at least as a temporary measure. “Although the Government has approved in principle a massive building programme, it is doubtful if —with all the delays that occur—it can be implemented in time. “Buildings being erected, and the completed areas coming to hand, are lagging behind the needs,” said the report. Providing sufficient buildings, together with staffing, was likely to be the main determinant of the universities’ ability to admit all those who would seek university education.
Referring to university halls of residence, the report
said the Government’s new subsidy for halls of up to 80 per cent of the cost with a maximum subsidy of £1440 a study-bedroom was pleasing. “By the end of 1965, it was clear that the increase in the subsidy would give a considerable impetus to the churches and other organisations prepared to contribute to, and raise money for, the erection of halls,” said the report.
