3 Changes By Canterbury
The naming of two new caps and the recalling of one old one —all in the forwards —are features of the Canterbury Rugby team to play Wellington at Lancaster Park on Saturday.
The selectors (Messrs R. H. Duff and G. T. Nolan) have introduced A. J. Banks, a Lincoln College lock, and K. Tanner, a New Brighton prop, to the pack and recalled the Waikari lock, J. A. Francis.
Farming calls have kept Francis out of the Canterbury side since 1964. He is an experienced forward, having represented Canterbury 27 times since 1961. The choice of Francis and Banks should strengthen Canterbury’s line-out play and Tanner should bring greater solidity to the front row. J. S. Baird, M. J. Millar and J. F. Burns have been omitted from the side to make way for the new players. Burns is on the injured list. W. M. Birtwistle, who suffered a leg injury in a club game last Saturday, has been chosen. The team is:— W. F. McCormick (vice-
captain); A. G. Steel, D. A. Arnold, Birtwistle; W. D. Cottrell, B. A. Watt: L. J. Davis; I. H. Penrose; N. G. Cornelius (captain), Francis, Banks, A. J. Wyllie; Tanner, J. N. Creighton, A. Hopkinson. Reserves.—Backs: W. Flewellyn, P. K. Hatchwell. Forwards: Baird, Miller. D. S. Pirie might also be required. He alone of the reserves will be permitted to play for his club on Saturday.
